Review: Adventure Time 6.01 & 6.02 „Wake Up“/ „Escape from the Citadel“.

„You are strong, child, but I am beyond strength.“

Coming off its best season yet, Adventure Time doesn’t pull any punches with its 6th season premiere. The two-parter „Wake Up„/ „Escape from the Citadel“ is the most audacious and gruesome episode of the show’s entire run, and it will be hard-pressed to ever produce such a mightily mythology-heavy, premise changing episode again. To top it all off, the season premiere is an entirely heart-wrenching episode too – making it a strong contender for becoming Adventure Time’s signature episode.

Wake Up„/ „Escape from the Citadel“ follows up on the cliffhanger courtesy of Billy’s Bucket List„: Finn’s dad is alive, and he’s at the Citadel, the universe’s (or some universe’s, I guess) top prison. In order to get there, Finn and Jake have to commit a „cosmic crime“. All seems to go reasonably well until the nemesis of all life, the Lich, shows up, and thwarts their plans…

Review: Adventure Time 5.21 „The Suitor“.

„That road you’re on… leads to nowhere.“

Adventure Time is the newest addition to my roaster of TV shows I’m following. It not only directly appeals to my off-beat kind of humor, it also turns out to be surprisingly deep, considering its short episodes (11 minutes) and its main audience are children (as it is broadcasted on Cartoon Network). For the first time on my blog, I will be doing these reviews in English. While my layout doesn’t exactly support that decision very well, it does make sense for several reasons:

  1. As an English major I’ve always felt closely linked to this language, also indicated by my frequent English quotes and many anglicisms in my German reviews. I would also like to just get more used to writing English essays, as I believe that might come in handy at some point in my life or another.
  2. Unfortunately, Adventure Time doesn’t seem to have a great following in the German speaking community, particularly not among adults. While I have successfully convinced a few friends of mine of Adventure Time’s quality, there just isn’t a big enough German readership to follow this show.
  3. I absolutely adore reading reviews of television shows. Whenever a new episode hits the television, I will at least spend as much time reading reviews as watching the show. Apart from my beloved A.V.-Club, however, hardly any websites seem to offer weekly reviews on this lovely show. Providing reviews for Schnell ermittelt, and interesting yet previously unreviewed Austrian cop-procedual, was one of my prime motivations to start this blog, and Adventure Time fits the bill here.

Adventure Time 5.21 SuitorWell, now that that’s settled, I’d say it finally is… adventure time!
