Review: Adventure Time 6×14 „Princess Day“.

„Girls like us just gotta stick together.“

Finn and Jake are Adventure Time’s protagonists, and both are male. It is thus no surprise that the theme of female friendship is seldomly featured on this show, a fact „Princess Day“ tackles rather pointedly: set at Princess Day, an event in which most of the show’s irregular female cast gathers and uses to bond.

Breakfast kingdom hosts this year’s Princess Day, but not everyone is thrilled: Lumpy Space Princess gets sick of the other princesses‘ wailing, throws one of her temper tantrums and leaves the room. Another guest, Marceline the Vampire Queen, agrees with her sentiments – together, they plot some mischief…

Review: Adventure Time 6×12 „Ocarina“.

„I love dad and everything, but I’ve only met him twice.“

One of Adventure Time’s more unusual narrative decisions was to introduce the offspring of one of the protagonists a couple of seasons ago, yet have them grow up off-screen and remain firmly in the background. It has marked Jake as some sort of jerk extraordinaire, rarely acknowledging this darker side of his. „Ocarina“ tackles this issue, but is hesitant to earnestly confront Jake with his negligence once again.

Family reunion! Usually, Lady Rainicorn raises their five children alone, but daddy Jake finally makes time to visit them. His son Kim Kil Whan has bad news for him, though: he has legally obtained the tree house Finn and Jake live in, and he has no intention of letting them off the hook – soon, Finn and Jake share their house with dozens of other inhabitants…

Adventure Time 6×11 „Little Brother“.

„Having a brother looks kind of fun.“

What Adventure Time does so well time and time again are stories that are entirely centered around a guest character that explores a part of Ooo Finn and Jake would not have access to, thereby completely sidelining the show’s actual protagonists. „Little Brother“ is one of those episodes, and does a fine job in fleshing out a character while telling a compelling story.

Review: Adventure Time 6×09 „The Prince Who Wanted Everything“.

„I can only be with someone who is my equal in every way.“

The day I learnt the Adventure Time mythology includes gender-swapped versions of all the protagonists, I came to understand that this show strives for actual greatness. „The Prince Who Wanted Everything“ is only the 3rd episode that features Fionna and Cake as their protagonists; but while the concept is still novel and interesting, the newest episode in Adventure Time’s alternate universe is a little lackluster.

Review: Adventure Time 6×08 „Furniture and Meat“.

„Spendin‘ money is kind of fun!“

Adventure Time boasts such an immersive, fully realized world that it can routinely take an element that has been established for a long time and spin a story around it. The fact that Finn and Jake have been hoarding money beneath their tree house has always been used as a neat joke to show that our protagonists go on adventures for the heck of it – in season six, Adventure Time finally sets out to explore what money really means to the duo.

Review: Adventure Time 6×07 „Food Chain“.

„Hey, have you noticed we are birds now?“

Adventure Time has never shied away from experimenting, and „Food Chain“ is a good example of that. Handed off to guest director Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Games), this non-canonical episode has its own unique vision and style, both animation- and story-wise. „Food Chain“ is less „out there“ than, say, David OReilly’s „5.15 A Glitch is a Glitch„, but luckily still feels like a true Adventure Time episode.

Review: Adventure Time 6.06 „Breezy“.

„I’m just gonna stop trying and let my flower wilt away. Who cares?“

After a long 3-week hiatus, Adventure Time finds itself on its new Thursday time slot, and starts it off with a surprisingly important episode: „Breezy“ seems like an innocent one-off character study episode at first glance, but turns out to be quite important to the show’s central mythology – including a rather divisive ending.
